Quilt sizes chart, from crib to king
Common starting sizes: crib 36 × 52″, throw about 50–70″ each way, twin 68–70 × 86–90″, queen 90 × 95–108″ and king 108–110 × 95–108″. Published charts disagree most on queen and king, because a bed quilt's size depends on the mattress depth and how far you want it to hang. Measure your own bed when it matters.

Why quilt size charts disagree
There is no official standard. A bed quilt is the mattress plus a drop down each side and the foot, and sometimes a pillow tuck of about 10″ at the head. A deep mattress needs a longer drop. A quilt that sits on top of the bedspread, rather than reaching toward the floor, needs less. The short queen lengths (95″) assume a modest drop and no tuck. The long ones (108″) allow for both. A crib quilt varies least, because it is a blanket rather than a bedcover.
How to size a quilt for your own bed
- Measure the mattress top: width and length.
- Decide the drop, measured from the top edge of the mattress down to where you want the quilt to stop.
- Width = mattress width + 2 × drop.
- Length = mattress length + drop (+ about 10″ if it tucks under the pillows).
From a target size to whole blocks
A quilt can't be 90″ wide if 90″ isn't a whole number of blocks. Take off the borders, then divide by one block plus one sashing strip and round to the nearest whole block: blocks across = (target − both borders + sashing) ÷ (block + sashing). Sashing, the app, works this out when you pick a size. With 12″ Ohio Stars, 2″ sashing and a 4″ border, its five presets land here:
| Preset | Blocks | Finished size |
|---|---|---|
| Crib | 2 × 3 | 34 × 48″ |
| Throw | 4 × 5 | 62 × 76″ |
| Twin | 5 × 6 | 76 × 90″ |
| Queen | 6 × 7 | 90 × 104″ |
| King | 7 × 7 | 104 × 104″ |
Each is the closest whole-block quilt to the target, not the target itself. To get nearer, add or remove a row, change the sashing width, or add a second border. How sashing and borders change the size is covered in their own guides.
Size decides the backing and the binding
Once both sides of the quilt are longer than 32″ (40″ of fabric less 4″ of backing overhang each side), the backing needs a seam. A twin, queen or king backing is three lengths of fabric. See how much fabric for quilt backing, and binding for the edge.
