Sashing

See the quilt in your own fabrics before you cut

Sashing is a quilt design app for Android. Photograph the fabrics you have, lay out classic blocks with sashing and borders, and it works out the finished size, the yardage for every fabric and a cutting chart with the ¼″ seams already added.

Your fabrics, not a colour chart

The point of planning on a screen is seeing whether these fabrics work together. So a fabric in Sashing is a photo: take one with the camera, pick one from your gallery, or use a solid while you decide. Crop it square and tell the app how many inches of fabric the square shows (2″ to 12″), so a big floral looks big on the quilt and a small sprig looks small. The wall itself is plain grey, because a tinted background changes how fabric reads.

What it does

Sashing's yardage screen for a 62 by 76 inch throw: cream sprig 2 7/8 yards, denim 7/8, orange dot 1/2, brown batik 1 1/2, backing two 84-inch lengths Sashing's cutting chart for the same throw, listing strips across the width of fabric and what to subcut from each

An Ohio Star throw: the yardage to take to the shop, and what to cut from it.

Blocks whose cutting charts were checked

A quilt design app is only as good as its maths. Every block in Sashing had its cutting chart computed from its geometry and compared, number for number, with charts published by quilt pattern designers (24 publishers, read on 29 September 2026). A block we could not match does not ship, and each block is offered only at the sizes that were checked, so every cut lands on an ⅛″ line of your ruler. (The one cut geometry cannot put there, the centre of a Square in a Square, is rounded up: a patch cut long can be trimmed, one cut short cannot.)

Missing one you love? The app has a “Missing a block?” button at the end of the library. What people ask for there is how we choose which blocks to add next.

Private, and it works with no signal

Sashing works with no internet connection, which matters in the back of a fabric shop. Your fabric photos never leave your phone, and the quilts you save stay on your device. There is no account to make. The app does send anonymous usage analytics and crash reports, and the purchase goes through Google Play; the privacy policy lists exactly what.

What it does not do

It draws straight-seam pieced blocks. Curved blocks (Drunkard's Path, Double Wedding Ring, Dresden Plate, Orange Peel), appliqué and English paper piecing are different drawing jobs, and V1 does not attempt them. There is no block editor yet, and it does not plan the quilting stitches.

It does not turn a photo into a quilt, and nothing in it is generated: every layout is yours and every number comes from written-down rules. There is no feed, no fabric shop and no ads.

What is free

Designing a quilt and seeing it in full, in your own fabrics, is free. Saving quilts, the yardage and cutting chart, the PDF and every further quilt need Sashing Pro, a weekly or yearly subscription with a 3-day free trial. You can cancel any time in Google Play, and Settings has a link straight there. Nobody sees ads, subscribers or not.
